    CUSTOMERS SERVED:
    Patients, families, allied health professionals, physicians, other registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, mental health techs, counselors, unit clerks, administrative personnel, members of the management team, staff from all hospital departments.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • To initiate and document special treatment procedures.
    • To assess, direct and intervene in crisis situations.
    • To provide leadership and direction to licensed vocational nurses, mental health technicians.
    • To provide assessment of patients’ psychiatric and medical status.
    • To contribute to treatment plan as a member of interdisciplinary team.
    • To administer medication and medical treatment as prescribed by Physician.
    • To provide and direct milieu management.
    • To document nursing care, treatment and patient’s response to treatment.
    • To provide health education to patients and families.
    • To maintain confidentiality of patient’s medical records.
    • To attend mandatory training and in-services.
    • To assist with the orientation and initial training process for other RNs, LVNs and MHTs.
    • Follow hospital policy for Absenteeism/Tardiness
    • Follows departmental and hospital safety and infection control policies, attends all hospital safety trainings, and reports all accidents immediately.
    • Completes all required trainings, In-services, and/or other requirements.
    • Actively participates in department and/or hospital committees’ activities, and/or special projects.
    • Analyzes and resolves issues in a logical and sound manner. Seeks help with decisions appropriately.
    • Maintains current knowledge of policies and practices, protocols and practices for assigned areas. Other self-development, initiatives: maintains required licensure/certifications of job; has gained additional formal qualifications beyond the minimum requirements of the job; or has learned additional job duties and skill; has followed up on any personal development plans.

    Assessments:
    • Completes a thorough initial nursing assessment within eight (8) hours of admission, identifying nursing diagnosis and patient goals. Measure: 12 randomly selected records per year to be reviewed by supervisor.
    • Documentation of ongoing patient assessment reflects the full range of needs, including physical, emotional, social, safety and educational. Measure: 12 randomly selected records per year to be reviewed by supervisor.
     

    Medication and Treatment
    • Administers and/or supervises the administration of medications and treatments according to Physician’s orders and hospital policies and procedures.
    A. Charts all medications administered, documenting any adverse reactions and responses to PRN medications.
    B. Ensures consent for psychoactive medications before first dose is given.
    C. Accurately transcribes medication orders.
    • Measure: 12 randomly selected records per year to be reviewed by supervisors for A and B. C will be monitored through medication and pharmacy variance reports.

    Treatment Planning & Milieu Management
    • Participates in treatment planning as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team; ensures that nursing interventions on treatment plan include, but are not limited to, methods for monitoring medication effectiveness and side effects and treatment of active medical problems. Measure: 12 randomly selected records per year to be reviewed by supervisor.
    • Provides milieu management through leadership provided to LVN, MHTs, counselors and other staff members. Measure: 12 randomly selected assignment sheets completed by the nurse while in charge will be reviewed for comprehensiveness by the supervisor each year.
    • Documents patient progress clearly and concisely. Measure: 12 randomly selected records per year to be reviewed by supervisor.
    • Provides appropriate nursing intervention and documentation in crisis situations including seclusion, restraint, psychiatric emergencies and medical emergencies. Measure: 12 occurrences per year by direct supervisor observation and/or review of documentation. Data sources may include progress notes, seclusion/restraint evaluation forms, incident reports, and Memorandum of Transfer.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development for the skills necessary to provide appropriate care for all age groups by effective communication, age-appropriate limit setting and interventions. Measure: 12 occurrences per year by direct supervisor observation.
    • Assesses the health education needs of patients/families and documents education provided. Measure: 12 randomly selected records per year to be reviewed by supervisor.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of appropriate nursing assessment, diagnosis, treatment, planning, intervention and evaluation of psychiatric patients. Ability to accurately administer medication and treatments and monitor for effectiveness and side effects. Knowledge of milieu management. Ability to delegate responsibility to other staff and monitor their performance. Ability to safely implement special treatment procedures. Skill in developing therapeutic relationship with adults and their families. Skill in preparing and maintaining appropriate medical record documentation. Skill in teaching patients and families about the patient’s health needs. Works autonomously, sets priorities and makes decisions of a complex nature. Maintains confidentiality and HIPAA standards. Regular and predictable attendance is required.

    EDUCATION:
    Required: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. We hire new Grads. 
    Preferred: BSN

    LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION:
    Current Texas State Registered Nurse License
    Current CPR
    Aggressive Behavior Management training – within 30 days of hire date.

    EXPERIENCE:
    Required: None. 
    Preferred: One year psychiatric nursing experience.

    What do the RN Residents do?

    The ideal candidate for the position will have the following background and experience: 

    Completed graduation from an accredited program for professional nursing education within one year prior to January 2024; BSN preferred.

    Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac and Life Support) certification required.

    RN state license with the State Board of Nursing in practicing state is required by end of residency program in order to be hired on into a permanent position.

    Essential Duties: 

    Acts as a resource person/liaison for employee, manager, and system on issues regarding occupational/employee health, regulatory agency rules/regulations/standards and related issues. 

    Demonstrates expertise in occupational/employee health and regulatory rules/regulations/standards using this knowledge in day-to-day practice and decision-making.

    Leads efforts to identify and prevent disease transmission by collaborating with the infection control resources to establish effective infection control practices.

    Communicates/collaborates proactively with Infection Control resources on surveillance and follow-up of communicable disease and blood/body fluid exposures.

    Plans, organizes, and provides occupational/employee health services to all employees/ students/volunteers as necessary, taking a proactive approach

    Coordinates the provision of employee health services with providers, human resources, ensuring effective communication and seamless service delivery

    Facilitates and leads required pre-employment screenings and testing, ensuring compliance with established protocols

    Monitors and evaluates compliance with the employee health program requirements and notifies individuals and leadership when there is a deficiency.

    Education/Experience:

    Bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Three years of clinical nursing capacity, occupational/employee health, public health, infection control, emergency department or other related area required. In lieu of degree, must have an associate degree in nursing and five years of clinical nursing capacity, occupational/employee health, public health, infection control, emergency department or other related area required. Fluent in English and Spanish required.

    Essential Duties:

    Assist the provider with the daily operations of Oral Surgery treatment and consultations.

    Receive and prepare patients for treatment

    Assist with surgery involving conscious sedation

    Ability to initiate and participate in resuscitation of patient during emergency situations utilizing BLS, PALS and ACLS standards and medications.

    Measure, monitor and record vital signs, medications, and treatment of patient; 

    Reviews and updates patient health history

    Monitor all controlled substances 

    Keeping informed of all current medication update/changes, and inform Oral Surgeon and Support Staff 

    Performing daily inspections of all instrumentation, materials and special equipment required within the surgical operating rooms 

    Contact & connect with Primary Care and Specialty Physicians for Medical Release/Clearance forms with instructions/limitations prior to treatment and ensure clinic notes are in order, follow up on any missing results – i.e. - histology or x-rays

    Advise patients, relatives or care givers on pre and post-operative instructions

    Aid in the provision of patients smoking cessation information

    Enter patient data and perform medication then document in Electronic Health Record

    Assist with maintaining supplies

    Provide operating room assistance with patients who receive general anesthesia, undergo surgical procedures

    Provide post-operative care and instructions to patient/family recovering from surgical procedures 

    Oversee/perform weekly inspections of Crash Cart

    Maintain clinic statistics and logs of medications dispensed

    Dispenses medications required for surgical procedures

    Draws and labels medication for use in IV procedures

    Check medications/supplies weekly for expired medications or supplies

    Able to start IVs, administer IV medication and record dispensed medications

    Practices and maintains proper infectious disease control procedures, including cleaning and sterilization of dental instruments and disinfection of operatory and laboratory equipment.

    Monitors and contacts patients to schedule necessary follow-up appointments with dentist.

    Education/Experience:

    Must have an associate degree in nursing. Bachelor’s Degree in nursing preferred. Two years of medical/surgical experience required. Knowledge and understanding of infectious diseases, cross-contamination and sterility required. Experience with conscious sedation and background in dealing with medical emergencies required. Uses evidence-based practice as recommended by Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) and American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS). 

    Language Ability:

    Ability to read, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to read and analyze medical documents. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Fluent in English and Spanish preferred.
